Next Best Thing to the Super Bowl

February 18th, 2008|Categories: News|

Toyota aired the “Star Party” Sequoia spot several times during the AFC & NFC championships. When I say this is the next best thing to the Superbowl, I am not joking. We were completely blind sided by the response. Song went to #3 on Amazon.com’s digital download chart. Album was the #2 Top Seller on CD Baby. And the lyrics from the ad were the #99 Google Top Search Trend. The music from the spot even got some love from Advertising Age’s Songs For Soap and Peter Blackstock from No Depression as well as Entertainment Weekly.

My song “Under the Waves” is featured in the SenArt Films release Bonneville starring Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Joan Allen. The picture opens on February 29th. CLICK HERE for more info.

So, what next? I have begun pre-production on the score for a short documentary film by Director Justin Mitchell (Drive Well, Sleep Carefully: on the road with DEATH CAB FOR CUITE). More on this project as it develops.

Blair Witch Toyota Pearl Jam Solo Project

January 14th, 2008|Categories: News|

Toyota is using my song “Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows” in a TV spot for it’s all-new Sequoia. The spot begins airing today. This song was co-written and co-produced with my partner Elaine Summers. It was originally written for the an independent film that I scored called Tattoo, A Love Story. Then, we expand the song and re-recorded it for my latest album Under the Waves.

I’m busy working on Stone Gossard music at the moment. You may know Stone. He is in a little band called Pearl Jam. I am contributing loads of harmony vocals and some guitars to his album. This is the follow up to an album I produced for Stone that came out on Epic Records in 2001.

Solstice (Directed by Daniel Myrick of Blair Witch fame) is out now on DVD. This thriller is distributed by The Weinstein Company and features my song “A Lot Like You”.

? Degrees of George Clooney

December 30th, 2007|Categories: News|

Composed music for two Qwest tv spots this month. Spots wil begin airing in early Jan. The latter of the two was directed by my friend Sam Jones. Sam is very talented, which is fine. What really matters is that he is chummy with George Clooney. I’m not sure if that makes me one or two degrees of Clooney. Either way, it’s pretty good.

Elaine Summers and I finished tracking and mixing a song called “The First Kiss”. Not sure when this one will see the light of day. Stay tuned.

Studio news: Installed ADAM S3A powered monitors. Their sound is stupendous.

Quite Ready For Prime-Time

November 15th, 2007|Categories: News|

I have begun writing music for another TV ad. Details later.

Tonight, my song “Going Whichever Way the Wind Blows” will be featured on ABC’s Men In Trees. Check local listings.

The Shriner’s Hospital commercial that I scored is airing now. Look for an opening shot of a young girl saying “I shouldn’t be talking to you.” The spot was directed by renaissance man Sam Jones. His book of photographs, The Here and Now is breathtaking and in stores now.

Stephen Ashbrook returned to the Puzzle Tree Studio earlier this month to cut a couple of new songs.

Studio news: we’ve added to our equipment list (Smart C2, Vintage DBX 160 & a TD4.)

Finally, two songs that I produced and co-wrote some time ago will be on Kim Virant’s new album due later this month.

If It Makes You Happy, Form a Band

October 30th, 2007|Categories: News|

OCT 1: My friend Jeff Trott is coming to the Puzzle Tree Studio today. We will work on writing songs together. Some of you may remember Jeff as lead guitarist in my touring band in the mid 90’s. Others may know him from Wire Train & World Party. Or for his collaborations with Sheryl Crow. Jeff has co-written and co-produced many of her biggest hits. Sing along: “If It Makes You Happy”, “Everyday is a Winding Road”, “A Change Would Do You Good”, “My Favorite Mistake,” “Soak Up The Sun”, the list goes on. Like I said before, he is a hit machine.

POST SESSION WRAP UP Jeff, Elaine and I had a blast writing. So much so, we have decided, without really thinking it through, that we are now a band. You can call us FOUR HOUR DINNER BREAK. Yeah, that’s right, we took ’em. Sitting around our mid-century Heywood Wakefield table with our bellies filled with fine vegan cuisine reminiscing about our days together on the road. Police escorts, puppet man, random taxi meetings in the Big Easy. You get the picture. We are going to meet back up at Jeff’s studio in Manhattan beach in a few weeks to record a couple of our new songs. Yes, we did stop shooting breeze enough to actually get some work done.

OCT31- POST SMOKEY SESSION WRAP UP: We cut two songs at Jeff’s Ocean View Studio in Manhattan Beach. Drummer Brian McCleod joined us on “Slow Winds” and “One Good Heart”. Much of southern California was on fire and the air was thick with smoke. Added an eerie vibe to the sessions. The sunsets were unreal. We are planning on getting back together sometime next year to continue working. Best case scenario would be releasing an E.P. by summer of 2008. We’ll see.

All You Need Is “Love” In Your Title

August 31st, 2007|Categories: News|

The DROGE & SUMMERS record has been bumped again. I have been asked by a very talented director friend (and certified member of the ‘in crowd’), to create music for a “very very short film with blatant product placement”.

Feast of Love opens in theaters on Sept 28. This film from Acadamy Award winning director Robert Benton stars Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinnear and features the title track from my latest album Under the Waves as well as a song I co-wrote and produced for Jaime Wyatt called “Wicked World”.

Partners In M.S., a short film by John Jeffcoat, with score by yours truly, will air this month on The Seattle Channel. The score features an adapted instrumental remix of my song “A Lot Like You” as well as underscore with guitar, accordion and piano. To view the short online go HERE.

Ian Moore‘s new album To Be Loved is out on Justice Records. I recorded vocals and piano on one song.

Studio news: We are the proud owners of an Apogee Big Ben Master Clock and Rosetta 800.

Who’s In Your Five?

July 31st, 2007|Categories: News|

I wrote and recorded music for two national T-Mobile TV spots that are airing now.

My song “Under The Waves” and a song I co-wrote and produced for Jaime Wyatt called “Wicked World” are included on the soundtrack album for the film Feast of Love. The album also features tracks by The Frames, Jeff Buckley, Corinne Bailey Rae, M. Ward and more. Album comes out on 8/7/2007. Film opens in Sept.

I just completed the score for a short documentary by director John Jeffcoat called Partners in M.S.

Starting my new record with Elaine Summers this month.

Also, joining Stone Gossard and some other rock and roll misfits in the studio in Seattle for a week or so. More later.

The New Phone Books Are Here

June 30th, 2007|Categories: News|

Updating with my new iPhone. Crazy.

This month I am finishing music for two TV commercials. I’ll update with air dates. They are both very cool and hillarious.

Around the 10th, work will resume on a short documentary. Mmmmm…ambient guitar.

Also been into planning and writing phase for the DROGE & SUMMERS record.
